Advanced Testing for Heart Rhythm Disorders at London Heart Group
An electrophysiology study (EPS) is a specialist test used to investigate abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). It allows your cardiologist to understand the electrical activity of your heart in detail and pinpoint the cause of irregular heartbeats.
At London Heart Group, we offer expert EPS testing in London, performed by experienced electrophysiologists using state-of-the-art technology to ensure accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
What Is an Electrophysiology Study?
An EPS is a minimally invasive test where fine, flexible wires (catheters) are passed through a vein—usually in the groin or neck—into your heart. These wires record your heart’s electrical signals from inside and may also be used to stimulate the heart in a controlled way to reproduce an arrhythmia.
The test provides vital information about:
The origin and type of abnormal rhythm
Whether your arrhythmia is dangerous or benign
Whether you would benefit from ablation therapy, a pacemaker, or other treatments
EPS is often performed under local anaesthetic and sedation, and patients usually go home the same day.
Who Might Need an Electrophysiology Study?
Your cardiologist may recommend an EPS if you:
Experience unexplained palpitations, dizziness, or blackouts
Have a known or suspected arrhythmia (e.g. atrial fibrillation, SVT, VT)
Have abnormal results from an ECG, Holter monitor, or event recorder
Have a family history of sudden cardiac death
Need evaluation before procedures like catheter ablation or ICD (implantable cardioverter defibrillator) implantation
Have WPW syndrome, long QT syndrome, or other inherited rhythm disorders
What Does EPS Diagnose?
An EPS can help identify the cause and mechanism of:
Ventricular tachycardia (VT)
Heart block or bradycardia
Pre-excitation syndromes like Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW)
Other complex rhythm disorders
It also helps assess risk of future arrhythmias or sudden cardiac arrest, especially in patients with structural heart disease or inherited electrical disorders.
What to Expect During Your EPS Procedure
Performed in a specialist cardiac catheter lab
You’ll be given a mild sedative to help you relax
Local anaesthetic is used at the entry site (usually groin)
Thin wires are guided to your heart to record and stimulate electrical signals
The test usually takes 1 to 2 hours
You’ll be monitored for a short time afterward and can often go home the same day
Is an EPS Safe?
Yes — EPS is a safe and routine test when performed by experienced cardiologists. As with any invasive procedure, there are small risks (bleeding, infection, or arrhythmia provocation), which your doctor will discuss with you in detail before the test.
