ECG
A quick and simple test to check your heart's rhythm and electrical activity, an ECG (Electrocardiogram) is a fast, painless, and non-invasive test that records the electrical signals in your heart. It’s often one of the first tests used to assess heart health and detect any abnormalities.
At London Heart Group, we use ECGs as a reliable way to help diagnose heart conditions or monitor existing heart problems.
What Is an ECG?
Every time your heart beats, it produces small electrical impulses. An ECG measures these impulses using sensors (electrodes) placed on your chest, arms, and legs. The results show how fast your heart is beating, whether it’s beating regularly, and if there are any signs of strain or damage.
The test usually takes just 5–10 minutes and is done while you’re lying down and relaxed.
Who Might Need an ECG?
Your doctor may recommend an ECG if you have symptoms such as:
Chest pain or discomfort
Palpitations (a racing or irregular heartbeat)
Shortness of breath
Dizziness or fainting spells
Unexplained fatigue
You may also need an ECG if:
You have high blood pressure, diabetes, or other risk factors for heart disease
You have a family history of heart problems
You’re about to start certain medications that can affect the heart
You’ve had a stroke or suspected heart attack
An ECG can also be used as part of a routine health check, especially if you’re over 40 or have risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
Why Is an ECG Important?
An ECG helps doctors:
Detect abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
Identify signs of a previous or current heart attack
Spot electrical conduction issues
Monitor heart health over time
Evaluate how well heart-related medications are working
In many cases, the ECG provides instant results that your cardiologist can interpret on the spot.
What to Expect During the Test
You’ll be asked to lie down and relax.
Small sticky electrodes are placed on your skin.
The machine records your heart’s activity and prints or displays the results.
The procedure is painless and there are no side effects.
You can return to normal activities immediately after the test.
24-Hour Holter Monitoring
If you’re experiencing intermittent heart symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, or fainting that don’t show up during a standard ECG, your doctor may recommend 24-hour Holter monitoring. This test uses a small, portable device that you wear continuously for 24 hours (or longer, if needed) to record your heart’s electrical activity throughout your normal daily routine.
It allows our cardiologists at London Heart Group to detect irregular heart rhythms that might be missed during a short, in-clinic ECG. Holter monitoring is painless and easy to wear under clothing, and it can provide valuable insights into your heart’s rhythm over time — helping us make a more accurate diagnosis and tailor the right treatment plan for you.
