Expert Heart Ultrasound Services at London Heart Group
An echocardiogram (or “heart ultrasound”) is a safe and highly effective test used to assess your heart’s structure and function. At London Heart Group, we offer both transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE) and transoesophageal echocardiograms (TOE or TEE) at our state-of-the-art cardiology clinic in London.
If you're experiencing heart-related symptoms or have been referred for a cardiac ultrasound, our experienced team of London cardiologists can provide fast, accurate testing and clear next steps.
What Is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram uses ultrasound waves to create real-time images of your heart. It is a key tool in diagnosing many heart conditions, including valve disease, heart failure, and congenital heart defects.
Echocardiograms are:
Non-invasive or minimally invasive
Radiation-free
Performed as outpatient procedures
Interpreted by expert heart specialists in London
Types of Echocardiograms Offered in London
Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE)
This is the most commonly performed type of echo. A small ultrasound probe is placed on the chest to capture images of the heart. It is completely non-invasive and typically takes 15–30 minutes.
TTE is used to diagnose:
Heart valve problems (e.g. aortic stenosis, mitral regurgitation)
Heart muscle conditions (e.g. cardiomyopathy)
Congenital heart abnormalities
Fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion)
Decreased heart function or heart failure
Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE/TEE) – Detailed Internal Heart Imaging
In some cases, a more detailed view is needed. A transoesophageal echocardiogram involves passing a thin ultrasound probe down the oesophagus (gullet), placing it closer to the heart for high-resolution images — especially of the heart valves, chambers, and back of the heart.
TOE may be recommended to assess:
Suspected infective endocarditis (infection on heart valves)
Blood clots or embolic sources after a stroke or TIA
Atrial septal defects or other hidden structural problems
Heart valve issues before or after surgery
Cases where TTE was unclear
The test is usually done with light sedation for comfort.
Who Might Need an Echocardiogram?
Your cardiologist may recommend an echocardiogram if you have:
Chest pain, breathlessness, or palpitations
A heart murmur or irregular heartbeat
High blood pressure with suspected heart complications
Previous heart attack or known heart disease
A family history of heart conditions
Stroke-like symptoms needing further cardiac investigation
It is also used to monitor known heart conditions over time or check heart function before surgery or starting certain medications.
