Cardiac Ablation in London
Expert care for heart rhythm disorders at London Heart Group
At London Heart Group, our leading London cardiologists offer cardiac ablation as a highly effective treatment for abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). If you experience palpitations, dizziness, or an irregular heartbeat, our expert team can provide a thorough assessment and the latest minimally invasive treatments to help restore your heart’s normal rhythm.
What Is Cardiac Ablation?
Cardiac ablation is a specialised procedure used to correct abnormal electrical signals in the heart that cause irregular rhythms such as:
Atrial flutter
Ventricular tachycardia (VT)
During the procedure, a thin, flexible catheter is inserted into a vein in the groin and guided to the heart. Using heat (radiofrequency energy) or cold (cryoablation), or non-thermal high voltage electrical pulses (pulsed field ablation), your cardiologist carefully destroys small areas of heart tissue that are causing the irregular signals. This helps the heart beat normally again.
Who Might Benefit from Cardiac Ablation?
You may be advised to consider cardiac ablation if:
Medication has not successfully controlled your arrhythmia
You experience side effects from anti-arrhythmic drugs
You have symptomatic or persistent atrial fibrillation
You wish to reduce your long-term dependence on medication
Your consultant will discuss your individual case and help determine whether ablation is the most appropriate treatment option.
What to Expect
Before the Procedure
You will undergo a comprehensive assessment, including ECGs, echocardiography, and sometimes cardiac MRI or CT. Your consultant will explain the procedure, benefits, and potential risks in full and answer any questions.
During the Procedure
Ablation is usually performed under local anaesthetic with light sedation or general anaesthetic. It typically takes two to four hours, depending on the type of arrhythmia being treated.
After the Procedure
You will be monitored in a recovery area for several hours. Most patients stay in hospital overnight for observation and go home the next day. You can return to normal activities within a few days, though heavy exercise should be avoided for about a week.
Your consultant will arrange follow-up visits and, if needed, further ECG monitoring to confirm that your heart rhythm remains stable.
How Safe Is Cardiac Ablation?
Cardiac ablation is a well-established and very safe procedure, performed worldwide with excellent success rates.
At London Heart Group, your safety is our top priority.
All procedures are carried out by experienced consultant electrophysiologists in specialist cardiac catheter laboratories equipped with the latest imaging and mapping systems.
You are continuously monitored throughout by a dedicated team of cardiac nurses, physiologists, and anaesthetists.
The risk of serious complications is low — typically less than 1–2% in most patients.
Common minor side effects (such as bruising at the catheter site or mild chest discomfort) usually resolve within a few days.
Before the procedure, your consultant will carefully assess your overall health, medications, and any other conditions to minimise risk and ensure the safest possible outcome.
Many patients are able to stop anti-arrhythmic medications after successful ablation and enjoy a significant improvement in symptoms and quality of life.
